Rej Bhumbra, MBBS, PhD, FRCS, is an experienced, caring and distinguished knee and hip surgeon working in London. He has been an NHS consultant at Barts Health for over a decade.

Dr Bhumbra has served as a consultant at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, and in Toronto, he was a senior fellow at Mount Sinai Hospital, SickKids and Princess Margaret Hospital, now known as Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Dr Bhumbra has published widely and is a former editor at The British Medical Journal.

Dr Bhumbra has served as network director of Trauma and Orthopaedic Services at NHS North East London and as a deputy lieutenant of NHS England — London. He is also a former consultant for the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, with an expertise in medical device technology.

Education

Dr Bhumbra received training during international fellowships in Toronto, at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai and at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. He obtained a First Class Honours in orthopaedic sciences and has a PhD in orthopaedic surgery and an MA in international relations.

Research

Dr Bhumbra has published on basic orthopaedic sciences, global health, hip and knee surgery, and musculoskeletal oncology. He has been a clinical orthopaedic lecturer at University College London and is a visiting professorial research director at the University of Barcelona in Spain. Dr Bhumbra has also worked as a consultant for a radiological artificial intelligence startup based in Germany and Switzerland.

Honours

Dr Bhumbra was awarded the Gold Medal at the British Orthopaedic Association and was also short-listed for best paper at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has a passion for philanthropy and charity and was awarded the honour of acting on behalf of the lord-lieutenant of greater London as a deputy lieutenant in 2022.
